Residents, visitors, or staff can honor Abernethy Laurels employees for providing excellent customer service by filling out a WOW card. Out of all the monthly cards, a WOW winner is selected for special recognition.
This month, Vanessa Smith, assistant director of life enrichment, received two nominations, with one from a family member saying, “You wow us when you 'always' speak to my daddy, Bruce, and include him in things. Vanessa genuinely cares about people. Love her.”
Vanessa will soon celebrate 15 years of employment at Abernethy Laurels, where she manages the life enrichment team and promotes independence and well-being for the independent living residents of the Village.
When asked what she most enjoys about her job, Vanessa shared, “I am blessed to have a wonderful team to work with... Every day I come to work, I see it as an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life…with a compliment, a hug, or just a listening ear. I have learned the importance of empathy and compassion when caring for our residents, and I am grateful for the wonderful relationships I have built with so many of them. I was especially inspired by Carl, a former resident. He motivated me every day with his strict exercise regimen. I remind myself sometimes that if a 90-year-old man can exercise and walk daily, I have no excuse but to do the same. I even named one of my dogs after him!”
